Metallica Band History

-------------------------------------------Lars Ulrich--------------------------------
In 1981 drummer Lars Ulrich put an advertisement in a local L.A. magazine seeking like-minded musicians. Singer/Guitarist James Hetfield would answer that ad. Later, lead guitarist Dave Mustaine and bass player Ron McGovney joined the band. McGovney was soon replaced by Cliff Burton and in 1982 soon before recording began on their first album "Kill 'Em All" the band decided that Mustaine, alcohol, fame and ultimately Metallica (Mustaine later went on to reach great heights with his own Metal band "Megadeth" and they have recently released their latest album "The System Has Failed") didn't mix and he was dismissed from the band to be replaced by Kirk Hammet.

----------------------------------------James Hetfield--------------------------------

In 1983 Metallica released their first album Kill 'Em All. Soon after in 1984 they released their second effort "Ride The Lightning". This album featured a famous ballad "Fade To Black" which discusses suicide. The band received a lot of stick for it and it was the first song the press really focused. Though the song discusses suicide the song was actually written when the band's equipment was stolen in Boston and they had to search two continents to get an amp that sounded like the one that was stolen. At this stage the band were already developing a reputation as heavy drinkers and they soon received the now infamous nickname "Alcholia".

---------------------------------------------
Cliff Burton--------------------------------

In 1986 Metallica's next album "Master Of Puppets" brought their sound to an even larger stage and also landed them a very high profile tour slot supporting Ozzy Osbourne. This was an important tour for Metallica, their popularity was rising and this put right in the eye of the general public and media. It was also their last tour as a support act. On the 27th of September 1986 Metallica's two tour buses where travelling on some empty stretch of road between the Scandinavian cities of Stockholm and Copenhagen. It was not even dawn when the second bus carrying the band members hit a patch of black ice and began to swerve down the road out of control. The bus turned on it's side and ground to a halt 60 feet further down the road. In the resulting confusion all but one member of the bus managed to miraculously climb out with only minor injuries and shock. However, their beloved friend and bass player didn't. Cliff Lee Burton died at the age of 24. The remainder of the tour was cancelled with Kirk and James flying back to America the following day.

One month later auditions were held for a new bass player. Die-Hard fan Jason Newstead learned all their songs in three days and at the audition when he was asked "what song do you want to play?" he replied "whatever you want." Days later he became Metallica's new bass player.
The album took just under a year and even while recording it the band knew this album was something special.

---------------------------------------Jason Newstead---------------------------------

"The Black Album" as it has been dubbed was very musically diverse and even featured an orchestra accompaniment in the out and out love song "nothing else matters". The album was released on August 13th 1991 with some record stores opening at 00:01 in order to be first to sell the album. Metallica's self titled album shot straight to number 1 in the album charts. The album reveals how the band decided to move away from the long and complicated songs of the previous albums especially "...And Justice For All". The album to date has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. The legendary tour which followed consisted of 302 dates and lasted 3 years. Metallica indulged in the temptations of the road, leaving a strained and weary brotherhood. In 10 short years Metallica had become the biggest metal band in the world. It was time for a break. It was 1995 before Metallica began witting songs again and these sessions resulted in their sixth album entitled "Load" which was released in 1996. The album was again produced by Bob Rock and was looser than the previous albums. Though it could never hope to reach the heights of success reached by "the black album" the album became a success in its own right reaching number 1 in the album charts. In fact so many songs came from the sessions that produced this album that they also led to the release of another album, Metallica's seventh in 1997.

-----------------------------------------Kirk Hammet-------------------------------------

In 1998 the band decided to release all their old "B" sides to their singles and even recorded 11 more cover songs and released the album Garage Inc. This album featured many cover songs including a version of the old Irish folk song "Whiskey In The Jar" which was originally recorded by the Wolfe Tones and also covered by Thin Lizzy. In 1999 Metallica further pushed the boundaries of metal music by teaming up with the orchestra that featured on "the black album" and doing a series of concerts around America with them. Later released and named "S&M" for "Symphony & Metallica" this recording even featured two songs written with the orchestra. Sadly the conductor and friend of Metallica was to pass away at the age of 55 in 2003. In 2000 Metallica were to feature on the soundtrack for the film "Mission Impossible 2" with the song "I Disappear". On the 17th of January 2001 the world was shocked to learn of the departure of Jason Newstead. Jason cited personal and creative differences with the band. However it is now widely known that the rising conflict between Hetfield and Newstead exploded in an argument about "Echo Brain" a side project that Jason had been working on. Jason called a meeting of the band where he proposed that the band take one year off. Over the years he had been getting increasingly frustrated that the other members of the band had constantly needed time off to be with their families when he had chosen not to have a family and to devote his life to music. So he thought a year off would be good. They could have time with their families and he could do his "Echo Brain" project. The rest of the band however did not agree. They felt it was time to start recording an album. So, Jason left Metalica. Despite this the band hired an old military base to begin recording only 3 months later with Bob Rock filling in on bass.

It was in the Fall of 2002 that the band decided it was time to search for a new bassist, and after some closed auditions with personal invitees over a few months, ex-Suicidal Tendencies/Ozzy Osbourne bass player Robert Trujillo was chosen to be the new member of Metallica. Note, member. Not bassist or hired gun or replacement. But a band member. His whole demeanor, happy, relaxed, warm, enthusiastic blended with over 15 years of experience and a ferocious finger-picking style made Robert the only natural choice.

And so it is that as you read this, 'St Anger' has been completed, expectations are reaching heights that even the band cannot believe and there is the excitement of the first proper tour since Summer Sanitarium 2000. Looking at them, listening to them and seeing them, Lars, Kirk, Robert and James look like excited, eager children, men who cannot wait to be let out of then house to go and wreak aural havoc. Why? Because they can't! Metallica are about to hit a whole new level...

Psychedelic in Pink

David Jon Gilmour: Born March 6,1946. Has 8 children. In constrast to Roger, Dave was reared by permissive and easygoing parents. At 13, he was given a Spanish guitar by a neighbor and so the journey began. Dave's greatest musical asset is his sense of feel and timing. When Dave was a young teenager, his father's profession drew him overseas, to the U.S, leaving Dave to fnd for himself....playing U.S. military bases with Jokers Wild, and working odd jobs, including the famous stint as a male model. Dave enjoys flying among other interests, and his collection consists of vintage aircraft that he has shown, and flown, at various airshows. his first love, however, is still his music.
George Roger Waters: Born September 6, 1943. Roger has 2 children. Roger's father was killed in action in Anzio, only a few months after he was born. As a young teen, Roger's pursuits included playing with toy guns (and shooting real ones), and staying up at night listening to his radio tuned to Armed Forces Network or Radio Luxembourg. He did not like his apprenticeship as a naval cadet, quit, and was given a dishonorable discharge. He instead became chairman of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament's local youth chapter. While Roger's lyrical brilliance of the past cannot be denied, his inability to come to terms with his grief and hatred eventually wore out its welcome with the majority of his fans. Roger quit Pink Floyd in the mid 1980's.
